Inherent Problems of My Apparent FG Experience

It’s a pain trying to get positive answers from people when you say that “yeah, I’ve played X game for Y time,” because most people expect you to be beyond casual with them and actually know fundamentals, bread n’ butters, etc. I’ve played a ton of fighting games, yet I just never got beyond casual. In fact, I’m lower than casual. I’m the guy who randomly mashed buttons, used fireballs all day, and generally stuck to a single button combo. To give you an idea, here’s a list of every single of that I’ve played at least once:

  • Street Fighter II The World Warrior
  • Street Fighter Alpha 3
  • Street Fighter EX plus alpha
  • Street Fighter EX2
  • Street Fighter EX3
  • Street Fighter 4
  • Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition
  • Street Fighter x Tekken
  • Mortal Kombat Trilogy
  • Mortal Kombat: Deception
  • Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter
  • X-Men vs. Street Fighter
  • Marvel vs. Capcom
  • Marvel vs. Capcom 2
  • X-Men Children of the Atom
  • Dead or Alive 2
  • Dead or Alive 4
  • Soulcalibur 3
  • Soulcalibur 4
  • Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny
  • Guilty Gear
  • Guilty Gear: Judgement
  • Guilty Gear X2
  • Guilty Gear Accent Core Plus
  • BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger
  • BlazBlue: Continuum Shift
  • BlazBlue: Continuum Shift 2
  • Tekken 3
  • Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection
  • Tekken 6
  • Fatal Fury
  • King of Fighters ’98
  • King of Fighters XI
  • King of Fighters XIII
  • Fighters History
  • Vanguard Princess
  • Immaterial and Missing Power
  • Scarlet Weather Rhapsody
  • Melty Blood Actress Again Current Code

As you can see, I have a lot of FGs played over the years, but none of them I got past just playing casually. I never learned any of these games seriously until now. I’m in a position where I can say that I’ve played a lot of FGs, yet when I play against other players, they would wonder why I’m so bad. The only thing that carried over with playing these games is basic combo execution. Simple things like 2-hit cancel to command special (s.LP cr.MK QCF+HP) were the best I could do.

Now, with the FGC experiencing lots of hype, I really think I should go back to my FG roots. How far back are my roots? Imagine Famicom with a bootleg Street Fighter copy around the NES-SNES transition days. My first real FG was during the first years of Street Fighter II on the SNES.

Anyways, that’s a brief history of my FG experience. Like I said, I barely got out of casual play in these games. The first one out of these that I wanted to play seriously was Street Fighter x Tekken. Of course that game will never see the light of day again after EVO 2012. Then AE2012 was another. Sadly, I just wasn’t interested in it. And then, when I saw KOF XIII during MLG Anaheim, I was hyped. I really wanted to play it. I started watching VODs from Road to EVO 2012 and Civil War 4. EVO 2012 came and my god, the massive hype during the matches were phenomenal. The gameplay itself was something I could get into, plus its popularity means more opportunities to compete, which is something I love to do. This is why people don’t get why I don’t stress over league matches in Call of Duty. eSports-level play is FUN for me.

I think I’ve taken enough of your time, but I’ll leave you with some info on the games I’ll be playing in the future, both as practice tools, and main games.

  • King of Fighters XIII — MAIN — Kula Diamond, Athena Asamiya, Yuri Sakazaki
  • Persona 4 Arena — MAIN — Mitsuru Kirijo
  • Tekken Tag Tournament 2 — MAIN — Lili Rochefort, Asuka Kazama, Alisa Bosconovich
  • Melty Blood Actress Again Current Code — PRACTICE — Half Moon Kohaku, Crescent Powerd Ciel
  • Vanguard Princess — PRACTICE — Eri Hasumi + Eko, Yui Kutuna + Sierra
